The year 2008 marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of the state of Minnesota. While many Minnesotans prepare to celebrate the event, it is necessary and desirable for us to use this occasion to take an honest look at how White European settlement of the state has affected, and continues to affect, the original Peoples whose homeland this is. The immense and ongoing harms suffered by the Dakota People in the course of White settlement of their land have never been "made right,' and the wounds inflicted have not healed. With this in mind, we hope to contribute to the ongoing dialogue that has begun about what this sesquicentennial could mean for rectifying harms between our Peoples.
